Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor Meets Nicola Coughlan's Joy in New SDCC 2024 Teaser for Doctor Who Christmas Special; WATCH

Doctor Who has revealed a sneak peek of its upcoming Christmas special at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. The show has maintained the tradition of Christmas specials since its launch in 2005.

These episodes usually feature a special guest star who joins the Doctor as an additional companion. This year it will be Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan, who joins Ncuti Gatwa's fifteenth Doctor. Nicola and Ncuti previously shared the screen for their cameos in Margot Robbie's Barbie Movie.

At the SDCC panel for the series “Doctor Who,” a first look was taken at this year's Christmas special. The Doctor travels through the 20th century and delivers an order of ham and cheese toasties and pumpkin latte to an unknown recipient.

Meanwhile, there are scenes where Joy checks into the Sandringham Hotel in London; a Silurian breaks through her locked door. Joy finally confronts the Silurian with a hairdryer in hand when the Doctor arrives.

The preview of Joy to the World premiered at Comic-Con, along with a video introduction from Coughlan about her character Joy. She also mentioned that she can't wait for people to meet Joy. The Bridgerton sensation raved about working with Gatwa and the Doctor Who crew. Of her character Joy, she said at the first unveiling: “A determined woman whose life changes forever when she meets the Doctor.”

Nicola Coughlan praises Ncuti Gatwa's performance in Doctor Who

Barbie co-stars Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan are returning together for the “Doctor Who” Christmas special, which has been announced for November 2023. Showrunner Steven Moffat raved about the “Sex Education” star's fine performance alongside Nicola Coughlan, saying in interviews that the performance was stunning and deeply moving.

Although the Derry Girls star couldn't reveal much about the episode, Coughlan said it was a joy to be back on the show with her former Barbie co-star Gatwa, who is a great doctor. She thought he played the role really well and had a blast during filming. She told The One Show: “[Ncuti Gatwa] is incredible in the role.”
