Deadpool and Wolverine fans celebrate unexpected cameo as best part of the film

If you wanted to avoid spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine, you might want to look away now—the most unexpected cameo has been hailed as the highlight of the film.

It goes without saying that every Marvel film features a number of surprise cameos, and in the case of Deadpool & Wolverine, most of them were successfully kept secret.

Now that the film is heading into its opening weekend, we know them all. While X-Men, standalone superheroes, and previous MCU films all come together in one film, it's a never-before-seen role that is the film's ace up its sleeve.

After his solo film was canceled, Channing Tatum finally appears in the MCU as Gambit, a mutant who can control kinetic energy and was first seen in the X-Men comics.

“Is anyone surprised that a certain cameo was actually good?” one fan posted on Reddit. “Channing Tatum as Gambit. The accent was so cartoonish but it actually worked and they gave him some badass scenes.”

“They just need to cast him full-time in the new X-Men movie but that's probably not going to happen,” agreed a second, while a third added: “It was pretty touching to see considering he tried for years to make the Gambit movie happen but sadly failed.”

“I remember reading an interview where he said he was so traumatized that he couldn't watch Marvel movies.”

The character was first introduced in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch. Tatum's solo film was announced in 2014 before entering, as industry sources say, development hell.

Three different directors came and went, and producers vied to push back the release date. The film was scheduled for May 2020, but Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox officially put an end to that.

“I love Gambit's design and was so happy to see him show up. Honestly, I didn't realize it was Channing Tatum until the fight scene. I'm just not that good at placing faces lol,” said another fan.

“Gambit was one of the best parts of the [Deadpool & Wolverine] “I thought the accent was hilarious and Deadpool's comment about how hard it was to understand him made it ten times better,” wrote another.

As fans have noticed, Tatum's Cajun accent is pretty wild in Gambit. It's even brought up in Deadpool & Wolverine when the Merc asks if his dialect coach is the Minions.

It is unknown whether Tatum will reprise the role later in the X-Men timeline.
