It's been a while since we've heard anything from Development Hell about the new Spawn movie, which has been par for the course for this thing. But it probably still has traction — and a fresh new title.

Blumhouse posted a first look at the title and possible logo font for title cards and marketing purposes on Twitter/X. The film's producers announce with photo evidence that the production is now called Royal brood.

This title could be a hint as to where the story of Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman and Scott Silver draws its inspiration from. Royal Brood is an ongoing series from creator Todd McFarlane, writer Sean Lewis, and artists Javier Fernandez and Brett Booth in which the escape of the greatest evil from Hell puts the throne of the Empire at stake.

There's more to it than that, but this brief logline is quite different from the movie everyone has been anticipating for years. Originally, the story was supposedly centered around supporting detective characters Sam and Twitch, with Spawn existing in the background as more of a ghost.

Jamie Foxx was cast as the titular antihero and Jeremy Renner as police officer Twitch. “My original plan got a little messed up,” McFarlane told ComicBook.com in 2023. That's putting it mildly.

The co-founder of Image Comics has had his plans for a crime thriller starring Foxx and Renner in the back of his mind for over a decade. But time has not been on everyone's side, and age, injuries and the health crises both men have nearly endured in recent years may have caused McFarlane and Blumhouse to reverse course.

They announced a new direction for the script in 2020, which was not a good year for the industry. Undeterred, everyone carried on and McFarlane was able to announce that he was close to the finish line and had 80 new pages that he had seen before the strike.

“We're bringing in A-list people. Not just one, but multiple A-list people…” McFarlane added in his remarks to CB. “What they don't want is a cheap, low-budget movie with all these big names. That's not why they're signing on. They're not looking for big extravagance. But they're not looking for an $8 million horror movie budget either.”

Royal Brood It's been decades in the making and there have been several missteps, but in 2025 the reboot could finally hit theaters.
