Mariah Carey tops poll of nation's favorite Christmas songs

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey has topped a poll of the most popular Christmas song in the UK.

The Christmas classic beat “Fairytale Of New York” by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl and “Last Christmas” by Wham in a poll of Magic Radio listeners.

The radio station asked listeners to vote for their favourite song as their Christmas truck toured regions across the UK, including Sheffield, Manchester, Glasgow and London.

Visitors to the truck had to vote for their favorite Christmas song and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” secured first place in all the cities visited.

Overall, the hit received 33 percent of the votes cast, Fairytale Of New York came in second place with 12 percent of the votes and Last Christmas received eight percent of the votes.

Magic Radio also asked guests about their favourite Christmas songs and Kian Egan from Westlife chose Carey's song.

He said: “So I’m going to go for one that I thought Mark [Feehily] Actually, I could have chosen “All I Want For Christmas” by Mariah Carey because it is simply a classic and I don’t think we will ever have a Christmas in our lives without this song.

“And of course we love Mariah, we worked with her a long, long time ago.”

Ed Sheeran chose Fairytale Of New York because he loves “happy Christmas songs.”

He added: “What I love about 'Fairytale Of New York' is that it still makes people dance and makes them feel happy, but it's actually quite a sad song.

“I love it when songs sound happy but have this dark undertone.”
