It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Lloyd Eldon MacDonald, affectionately known as “Mac,” on July 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
A proud Cape Bretoner and miner's son, he was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, on February 11, 1944, to the late Hazel (née Kelloway) and Rankin MacDonald. Mac joked that his mother would have spared him the name Valentine if he had been born on Valentine's Day.
Mac left the island in 1963 and travelled to the big city of Halifax to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He eventually became an Air Force Policeman, serving overseas with 4th Squadron Baden-Söllingen in Germany (1967-1970) and then serving at CFB Moncton, Gagetown and twice at Shearwater. During this time and while attending night school, Mac graduated from Saint Mary's University in 1979 and received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Russian Studies. In 1982, Mac was promoted again to supply technician, eventually retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1990 and becoming a Canadian Customer Service Representative that same year. Mac re-enlisted as a Canadian Forces Reservist (supply technician) with the 31st Service Battalion in Saint John, New Brunswick and served proudly alongside his daughter for a time. When 9/11 happened, Mac was one of the many customs officers suddenly dispatched to Gander to help clear the many confused and frightened airline passengers. Looking back, Mac would say that being a small part of history was one of his proudest moments.
He was a big believer in volunteering and giving back to his community. Over the years he was involved in local school boards, hosting bike races to teach children the rules of the road, being a scout leader, and in various other organizations.
Mac retired from public service in 2003 and eventually moved to Edmonton, Alberta with Cathy in June 2020 to live with their daughter. Unfortunately, due to health issues, Mac had to move into the Youville Home in St. Albert in July 2021. As a former outfielder for the CFB Moncton Men's championship softball team, and even while in care, Mac faithfully followed his beloved Toronto Blue Jays, always hoping for a repeat of their glory years as World Series Champions.
Mac is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Catherine “Cathy” Anne MacDonald (née Bowlin), whom he met at a dance in Chatham when the band played Cathy's Clown, which later became “their song.” He is also survived by his daughter Maria Sellars (Rick), his son Malcolm MacDonald (Heidi), his grandchildren HeatherAnn Masson (Chris), Rowan and Quinn MacDonald, and his sisters Melba and Yvonne.
His sister Bernice and his brothers Bryson, Garfield and Maxwell had already died before him.
In accordance with Mac's wishes, there will be no service. Finally, we would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Covenant Health Youville Home St. Albert.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home of St. Albert.
