Mariah Carey never thought that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” would be a hit

Mariah Carey never thought that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” would become such a big hit.

The superstar recorded the song in 1994 for her first Christmas album, “Merry Christmas.” Since then, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has become a Christmas classic and continues to grow in popularity with each holiday season.

In an interview with W magazine, Mariah talked about the song and recalled how the basic idea came to her while playing around on a keyboard.

“I had a keyboard, and no, I'm not a piano player by any means, but I can pluck chords if I need to,” she said. “I didn't want it to be tied to a particular era, so we didn't use sounds that were popular at the time. That way it would feel classic and timeless. But I never imagined it would become such an important part of my life.”

Mariah went on to say that she was concerned that it was a little too early for her to release a Christmas album in the mid-1990s.

“Okay, the idea of me even doing a Christmas album came from the record company. It was very early in my career and I thought it was a bit early for me, but I thought, 'Well, I love Christmas.' I had some very sad Christmases as a kid, but I always try to find the bright light there,” the Believe hitmaker added.
