GOP congressman criticized after posting Christmas photo with gun four days after school shooting

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky faced criticism after posting a photo of himself and his family smiling and holding guns in front of a Christmas tree, just four days after a school shooting in Michigan left four people dead. Reuters reports.

Massie captioned the photo, which he tweeted on Saturday, “Merry Christmas! PS Santa, please bring ammo.” Massie is known for his libertarian views. In April, he introduced a bill that would allow 18-year-olds to purchase handguns.

Massie has not yet commented directly on the media furore that has arisen around his post, but he has answer to a critic on Twitter who wrote that “the bar” – the standard of expected behavior – “was on the floor but you somehow managed to dig a tunnel under it.” Massie responded, “The BAR is under the couch. #sassywithmassie,” referring to the acronym for a Browning Automatic Rifle.

Manuel Oliver, the father of one of the victims of the 2018 Parkland school massacre, called the post “very mean” in an interview with CNN's Jim Acosta. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) posted a tweet and called Massie a “callous asshole.”
