Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s “exuberant” Christmas celebrations broke with many historic royal traditions

The royal family has many traditions that go back decades, the most important of which is the annual Christmas walk to St Mary Magdalene's Church on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where they greet crowds of well-wishers who queue up to see them. In 2016, before the birth of Prince Louis, George and Charlotte were treated to a Middleton-style Christmas before heading off again on Boxing Day to visit Prince William's family – but not before taking part in all the Middleton family traditions.

Speaking about the royal family’s different attitudes to Christmas, royal expert Robert Jobson The Express“On Christmas Eve, when the whole clan comes together, the Queen’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren put the finishing touches to the six-metre-high Christmas tree in the White Drawing Room.

“Presents are opened at teatime on this day, as the royals still follow the German custom of opening their presents on Christmas Eve. Presents are laid out on a white linen trestle table in the Red Drawing Room, with cards marking exactly where the stacks of presents should be placed.

“Once everyone has arrived, the royal guests will enjoy a traditional Christmas celebration, during which the Christmas tree will be decorated once again and inexpensive and fun gifts will be distributed.”
