Nostalgic toys and family games are the most popular Christmas gifts at Hamleys

Nostalgic toys and games for all the family are at the heart of Hamleys' top picks for Christmas this year, store managers revealed.

With children spending more time at home, there is also a focus on educational toys and items that keep children active during the holidays.

Steven Pearson, senior buyer at Hamleys, said that despite the uncertainty caused by coronavirus, it was important that families could still have a “magical time”.

“We have a selection of educational toys,” he said.

“We have some lovely toys and some board games to bring the whole family together in the living room and make this Christmas truly magical.

“Families have done a lot of learning at home this year and (the Osmo Genius math game) really takes it a step further.

“It uses a tablet to play games and teach children ages five to ten.

“(Parents can) sit with them, have fun, but also think about education.”

Mr Pearson added that the selection will also include products that encourage young people to get outside.

“We still take the kids outside whenever possible because while we have a lot of toys to play with inside, I think it's really important to get the kids outside,” he said.

“I have two children myself and sometimes we have to make the effort to go out as a family while maintaining social distancing, but a scooter is a great way to do that.”

Top picks from Hamleys include Rollin' Rovee, Uno Flip, Monopoly For Sore Losers and Barbie Dream Camper.

Mr Pearson said a teddy bear dressed as a surgeon wearing a face mask had also proved popular during the pandemic.

“Kids want to emulate the NHS, so we've seen some great sales with the little bear,” he said.
