81-year-old Uhrichsville man charged with attempted murder

UHRICHSVILLE – An 81-year-old Uhrichsville man is scheduled to appear in Tuscarawas County Southern District Court on Tuesday facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, after he fired a gun at a woman.

Uhrichsville officers were dispatched to a residence on Roanoke Avenue around 8:57 p.m. Monday for a report of a shooting involving John Valentine.

According to Uhrichsville Police Captain Mike Hickman, officers from Uhrichsville and Dennison arrived at the scene and were able to rescue the victim. The victim reported that Valentine fired four shots at her inside the house, with two of the shots missing her head by a few inches.

Valentine briefly left the residence several times and ignored all requests to surrender, Hickman said.

Officers were then assisted by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Department and the Ohio State Patrol. The Ohio State Patrol deployed its crisis negotiator, who began a telephone dialogue with Valentine.

After a 45-minute conversation between the crisis negotiator and other family members with Valentine, he surrendered peacefully to officers, Hickman said.

Valentine was charged with attempted murder, assault, obstruction of justice and failure to comply with regulations. He is currently being held in the Tuscarawas County Jail.
