August is open-air music season – these shows are worth seeing

In case you haven't noticed, August is the time for big open-air music festivals. They take place in shopping malls, in Gubei, in parks, everywhere.

We've compiled a list of the ones we think are worth checking out. Read on to find out where you can satisfy your music hunger this month.

INTRO 2024 Festival for Electronic Music

Amid towering chimneys, rusting furnaces and giant industrial machinery, a vision of the future takes shape on a flying saucer-shaped stage… and so begins the INTRO 2024 Electronic Music Festival, which returns to Shougang Park for its 15th year next weekend.

When: Saturday, August 17 to Sunday, August 18, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. (music starts at 3 p.m.)
Where: Halls 11 and 12, Beijing Shougang Park

“Goodnight Ferries Wheel” concert series at Longtan Middle Lake

Every Saturday in August, different bands come to play different genres of music as the sun sets over the giant Ferris wheel in this park east of the Temple of Heaven.

2024 Shiyuan Park Music Live

Sitting on the grass, listening to music—and hopefully a cool breeze—waft through the air… that's the scene at Shiyuan Park during the Shiyuan Jianghu Music Live Season. This year, there are also concerts on weekdays, and there's also a whole buffet with food galore to enjoy while listening to music.

Additionally, there's a special Qixi concert tomorrow (see poster above), so if you're looking for a good Chinese Valentine's Day date idea, this might just be it.

When: Sat. 10 and 31 Aug., from 7pm

Universal Studios Music @ CityWalk Festival

Another music festival with food is the Music @ CityWalk Festival, which features plenty of music and plenty of food vendors, the latter also offering summer drinks, ice cream, coffee, cocktails and other treats. Since it's held on Universal CityWalk, all the restaurants along that thoroughfare are also available to choose from – making it a music festival with the characteristics of a food fest.

When: Every Saturday and Sunday until September 1st, 7.30pm-10pm
Where: Universal Studios CityWalk, lawn area between Peet's Coffee and Neon Street Hawkers
Tickets: Free admission


Starry Sky Music Season in Gubei Water Town

Electronic music, national flavor, pop music and more dominate this music fest, which takes place two hours northeast of downtown Beijing. In addition to the music selection, other activities are offered, including markets, pool events, watermelon eating contests and more.

When: Every Friday and Saturday until August 25, 7.30-8.30 p.m.
Where: Riyue Dao Square, Gubei Water Town
Tickets: Free admission
