Fifth Banksy in five days appears in London

Artist Banksy has confirmed that he is behind a new artwork featuring two pelicans above a fish and chip shop in north-east London.

The birds can be seen silhouetted fishing above the shop on the corner of Pretoria Avenue and Northcote Road in Walthamstow.

Is this the fifth image in London since Monday that the elusive street artist has confirmed to be his work via his Instagram account?

On Monday a goat appeared in Kew, on Tuesday two elephants were spotted touching trunks for the first time in Chelsea, on Wednesday three monkeys hanging from a bridge in Brick Lane drew crowds and on Thursday a howling wolf was installed on a satellite dish in Peckham – which within hours was believed to have been stolen.

One local resident told BBC News: “It’s really exciting.

“A friend messaged me this morning and told me it had appeared on my street. So we agreed to come over as soon as possible.”

“So funny and healthy”

She added: “It's so much fun and so healthy, and that's what's really nice to see.”

She said she thought the work's location above Bonner's Fish Bar was significant. “It's something of an icon of the area, so I'm sure that's why it was chosen. It's been here for a long time and it's very popular.”

Hannah, another local, said she joined the other viewers as soon as she heard about the work.

“I was lying in bed scrolling through social media when it came up.”

She added: “I said, 'Come on, kids, put your coats on, we're going out and look at the new Banksy at Bonners.'”

“We live a few houses down, so it’s very exciting.”

On Thursday, the Bristol-based artist posted on Instagram an image of the silhouette of a howling wolf on a satellite dish in Rye Lane, Peckham, south London.

It was later removed. A video appears to show two people taking it down with a ladder and carrying it down the street.

The Banksy press team told the BBC they “believed” it had been stolen.

The Metropolitan Police said it had been called to reports of a “stolen satellite dish containing artwork” but no arrests had been made.

According to the BBC's knowledge, the art series is scheduled to end at the end of this week.
