Heritage Days 2024: the programme at the Museum of the First World War in Meaux (77)

On the occasion of the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days), the Musée de la Grande Guerre opens its doors on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2024 to take us into the heart of its reserves.

Since its founding in 2011, the Museum of the Great War took part in the annual Heritage Days. For this 40th edition, curious visitors are invited to learn more about the history on 21 and 22 September 2024 of the First World Warthanks to previously unpublished collections carefully preserved by the museum team.

Through a chronological and thematic tour suitable for children from 7 years, the museum helps us understand how the world came to this Great Warand how this conflict, with its duration and violence of rare intensity, has completely changed the face of the world.

This museum in the city of Meaux is dedicated to the First World War, with some 70,000 historical objects And interactive displaysThis extensive collection is largely the result of research by Jean-Pierre Verney, a historian specializing in the First World War. Photographs, statues, military equipment, paintings, propaganda material, soldiers' uniforms… In its exhibition rooms, the museum highlights the human, military and technological upheavals that this war brought about from the point of view of different nations.

On the program of the Journées du Patrimoine at the Musée de la Grande Guerre:

  • Guided tour of the reserves
    21 and 22 September

    Accompanied by a member of the museum's conservation team, you will gain access to areas normally closed to the public – the museum's reserves. Discover how objects not on display are conserved and learn about conservation techniques.

  • Military transport tour
    21 and 22 September

    A guided tour of the various means of transport of the First World War, with a focus on the vehicles on display in the museum grounds.

  • Focus on the future education gap
    21 and 22 September

    Take a look at the construction site of the museum's future educational trench, scheduled to open in November 2024. Under the guidance of the museum director, you will learn more about the different construction phases of this project.

  • Tour “Military Communication Networks”
    21 and 22 September

    A guided tour focusing on the different types of communications networks during World War I: cable networks, radio, pigeon racing, trench systems… everything that makes up trench warfare.
