UPDATE 13.08.2024: United States Attorney Jaymi Sterling announced today that Tyler Ray Marini Sater, 22, of Stoney Beach, Maryland, was sentenced to 59 years in prison, including 44 years to be served, for multiple criminal convictions related to his week-long, single-crime spree in December 2022.

On December 13, 2022, Sater committed a knifepoint robbery at the Cloud Smoke Shop in California, Maryland. On December 19, 2022, just six days later, he committed another series of crimes at the Wildewood Shopping Center. As a result, he was convicted of robbery, attempted armed carjacking, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, attempted injury to a police animal, and racketeering and vagrancy. While awaiting trial, Sater fled to Charles County. He was subsequently charged and convicted of second-degree escape.

“While the defendant was on probation in several other counties for disturbingly similar crimes, he fled to our county and began a lone-wolf crime spree. His intentional acts harmed several community members, all of whom suffered the consequences of his criminal conduct,” said District Attorney Sterling. “This sentence is a critical step in protecting the public and ensures that this defendant can no longer target the citizens of our community.”

Senior Assistant District Attorney Alena Mosier prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of St. Mary's County.

The lead investigators were Detective Warren Forinash, Detective Daniel Sidorowicz and Detective Taylore Nauman of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.

The Honorable Michael J. Stamm presided over this case.

UPDATE 22.12.2022: The suspect was identified as Tyler Ray Marini Sater, 20, of Stoney Beach, Anne Arundel County.

Sater remains in stable condition in the hospital. He has been charged with the following:

Armed robbery; robbery; attempted armed auto theft; attempted auto theft; unlawful taking of a motor vehicle; two counts of attempted unlawful taking of a motor vehicle; first-degree assault; second-degree assault; attempted harm to a police animal; attempted cruelty to animals; three counts of roguery and vagrancy; malicious damage to property over $1,000; theft: $1,500 to under $25,000 and attempted theft: under $100.

Sergeant Timothy Wesner, who has been with the department for 10 years, was identified as the deputy who fired his weapon, striking the suspect twice. Per policy, Sergeant Wesner will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

UPDATE 21.12.2022: On Monday, December 19, 2022, at approximately 9:32 p.m., police responded to a reported car theft at Wawa located at 23141 Three Notch Road in California.

The victim stated that when she entered the store, her vehicle was left with the engine running and unlocked for approximately 4 minutes. When the victim came back outside, her vehicle was gone. The value of the vehicle was $9,000.00 and inside was an Apple iPad valued at $800.00.

When patrol officers arrived on the scene, the victim (hereinafter referred to as Victim #1) provided updated information to the St. Mary's County Emergency Operations Center as she was able to track the vehicle using the Find My iPhone app/account.

A witness reported to Victim #1 that a white male wearing a camouflage jacket approached the victim's vehicle on a bicycle and attempted to place his bicycle in the vehicle, but was unable to do so. The suspect then entered the victim's vehicle and fled the area.

Victim #1 told 911 dispatch that the iPad was located at the Sleep Inn and Suites at 23428 Three Notch Road in California.

Officers arrived at the hotel and found the stolen vehicle unoccupied in the hotel parking lot. When officers entered the hotel lobby, they spotted a white male wearing a camouflage jacket and attempted to apprehend the suspect. At the time, the suspect pulled out a fixed blade knife and fled on foot. The suspect entered the stolen vehicle but was unable to start it. He then exited the vehicle and continued to flee on foot. He ran across all lanes of Three Notch Road and entered the Wildewood Shopping Center parking lot, where he encountered a running, parked 2017 Ford Expedition with an adult female inside. (Victim #2)

The suspect threatened the victim with the knife, ordered him to get out, and attempted to open the driver's side door. However, the doors were locked and Victim #2 refused to open or unlock the door and drove off. While Victim #2 fled, the suspect slashed the vehicle with the knife, causing approximately $2,000.00 in damage.

Corporal Foor and his K9 partner Dyno began pursuit on foot, and as K9 Dyno approached the suspect, he pointed his knife at the K9, who was later reported to be unharmed.

The suspect then approached a 2014 Honda Civic that was running, unoccupied, and unlocked. The vehicle is valued at approximately $9,000.00. The suspect then opened the passenger door and entered the vehicle when a St. Mary's County Sheriff's Deputy opened fire on the suspect, striking him at least once in the upper body and incapacitating him.

The suspect is accused of the following:

  • Robbery
  • Armed robbery
  • Attempted car theft
  • Attempted armed car theft
  • Unauthorized possession of a motor vehicle
  • Attempted unlawful possession of a motor vehicle – two counts
  • First degree assault
  • Second degree assault
  • Attempted injury/killing of a law enforcement animal
  • Attempted animal cruelty
  • Villain and vagabond – three charges
  • Malicious damage to property – value over $1,000
  • Theft $1,500 to under $25,000
  • Attempted theft $1,500 to under $25,000
  • Attempted theft under $100

UPDATE 20.12.2022: On December 19, 2022 at 9:32 p.m., officers responded to a call to the California Wawa in the 23100 block of Three Notch Road in California regarding a reported stolen vehicle.

Officers located the stolen vehicle minutes later at a hotel in the 23400 block of Three Notch Road. They made contact with a person matching the suspect's description and then fled on foot toward the Wildewood Shopping Center.

Officers pursued the suspect, who was armed with a knife. They tried less-lethal means, using a Taser to stun the suspect multiple times, to no avail, and they deployed a sheriff's sniffer dog.

The suspect attempted to steal an occupied vehicle in front of a restaurant, but the victim fled. The suspect continued to flee through the mall and entered another vehicle that was traveling with the engine running. An officer fired three shots from his service weapon.

Officers immediately administered first aid to the suspect, who was subsequently flown to a nearby trauma center for treatment and remains in critical condition.

No injuries to officers were reported. The suspect is an adult white male and has yet to be positively identified.

In accordance with Maryland state law, the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID) was contacted and informed of the incident but declined to investigate.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with sheriff's office policies and procedures.

This incident remains under investigation and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. 19.12.2022: On Monday, December 19, 2022, at approximately 9:34 p.m., St. Mary's County Police responded to a reported auto theft at Wawa located at 23141 Three Notch Road in California.

The emergency caller reported that a white man had stolen his gray 2014 Ford Escape.

The victim was able to track the vehicle using the Find my iPhone app and told police that the vehicle was traveling north on Three Notch Road. A short time later, the 911 caller reported that the vehicle was parked across from the Wildewood Shopping Center.

When police arrived on scene, they found the vehicle parked in front of the Sleep Inn & Suites. During the course of their investigation, officers encountered a person matching the suspect's description.

A short foot chase ensued. When the suspect and officers reached the parking lot of the Wildewood Shopping Center/Outback Steakhouse, the suspect pulled out a knife, prompting officers to deploy a taser, but it was unsuccessful. At least one officer fired one shot, striking the suspect in the upper body.

Fire and rescue services were immediately called to the scene of the accident and the Maryland State Police Trooper 7 helicopter landed at the scene to transport the suspect with serious injuries to a nearby trauma center.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is on scene and the investigation is ongoing. They have released the following information.
