Who killed Maurice Turner? SUV caught on video fleeing crime scene in Birmingham

The search continues for the gunman or gunmen who shot and killed a 52-year-old man in his Birmingham apartment last month.

Birmingham police released surveillance footage of an SUV fleeing the scene on Wednesday in the hopes that someone might recognize the vehicle or come forward with information about the case.

Maurice Turner died on July 17 on the kitchen floor of his home in College Hills.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m. this Wednesday, North Precinct officers responded to a report from a shot spotter in the 800 block of Jasper Road.

The gunshot detection system registered ten shots from this building, near Eighth Avenue West.

Sergeant LaQuitta Wade said when police arrived at the scene, they saw nothing unusual and no one in need of assistance.

Then, at 1:51 a.m., police received a call that a person had been shot.

Police and firefighters arrived and declared Turner dead at 2:03 a.m.

Turner, a father of two daughters and a son, was in the kitchen when the gunman or gunmen opened fire through the back door of the first-floor apartment. The bullets shot straight through the house, leaving holes in the front windows.

Turner's roommate, a close friend of his, was in his own room when he heard gunshots.

“The roommate stated he was in his room and didn't see anything,” Wade said. “But then he heard what sounded like fireworks and started looking around his apartment. That's when he noticed the victim lying unconscious on the floor.”

Turner's death was a devastating blow to those who loved and knew him best.

“It's devastating,” said his sister, DeQuacha Fields. “It's still a blur.”

“We can't comprehend it,” Fields said. “We don't understand why someone would want to do this to our brother.”
