83-year-old Asharam Bapu was arrested in 2013 for the rape of a young girl.

New Delhi:

Self-styled 'Patman' Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence for raping a minor, was released from prison today and given seven days' parole for medical treatment.

The 83-year-old, whose real name is Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani, was arrested in 2013 for the rape of a young girl in his ashram in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and is in the central prison there.

He was recently admitted to AIIMS Jodhpur after developing a heart ailment and was undergoing treatment there.

Asaram Bapu wants an Ayurvedic treatmentent
The Rajasthan High Court has allowed Asaram Bapu to undergo seven days of treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital in Maharashtra under police custody.

He had insisted on Ayurvedic treatment and requested the court to grant him permission to undergo treatment specifically at the Madhavbaug Multidisciplinary Cardiac Care Clinic and Hospital in Pune.

Earlier in March, he had sought 14-day parole in the same petition before the Supreme Court. However, the court rejected the application after the Pune police expressed concerns that a public order threat had arisen during his hospital stay.

He was then allowed to undergo Ayurvedic treatment for about fourteen days in a private hospital in Jodhpur.

Asaram Bapu’s rape case
A court in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment in April 2018 after finding him guilty of raping a minor in his ashram in 2013.

His two accomplices were sentenced to 20 years in prison by the court in the same case.

In January 2023, he was also convicted of raping a woman from Surat in an ashram in 2013.
