One dead and one injured in traffic accident in Barron County

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – One person was killed and another was injured in a traffic crash Wednesday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The accident occurred at 5:23 p.m. on US 53 in Barron County near Haugen.

Initial investigation and witness statements indicated that a minivan was passing other northbound vehicles in the wrong lane when it collided with a southbound sedan pulling a motorcycle trailer, officials said.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was killed.

The other driver, who was in a minivan, was flown to Eau Claire by LifeLink.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating the accident.

WisDOT officials said both directions were moving in the northbound lanes of Highway 53 at the time of the crash. They said there were delineator posts along the double yellow center line.

Traffic on Highway 53 was diverted for 3.5 hours.
