Yankees 3B Jazz Chisholm Jr. lands on IL due to UCL injury, may require surgery

New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. has a UCL injury in his left elbow and may need surgery.

The Yankees officially placed Chisholm on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. Manager Aaron Boone announced the diagnosis to Yankees sportscasters on Tuesday before New York's game against the Chicago White Sox. Boone said surgery to repair the injury is an option. Chisholm will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury and next steps.

“We'll see what we have,” Boone said, via ESPN. “We've obviously only been at it for a few days. But we're also fairly optimistic.”

Chisholm injured his elbow in Monday's 12-2 loss to the White Sox when he slid headfirst into home base.

He left the game and underwent imaging on Tuesday to seek a diagnosis. The news is a major blow to a Yankees team currently battling the Baltimore Orioles for the AL East crown.

The Yankees acquired Chisholm from the Miami Marlins before the trade deadline in July, and since his arrival he has brought a burst of energy to the team and buoyed an offense that struggled to get past hitters Aaron Judge and Juan Soto during several dry spells during the season.

“He's been a dynamic player for us,” Boone said of Chisholm, via ESPN. “He brings power and speed. He's done a great job on defense. He's been great in space. But hopefully it won't be too long and we can get him back.”

Despite the offensive struggles, the Yankees (71-50) enter Wednesday's game with the second-best record in the American League and a half-game lead over the Orioles (70-50), who are in first place in the AL East, and will be without the services of Chisholm for the foreseeable future.

Chisholm, an All-Star in 2022, has been in top form since joining the Yankees' roster on July 28. In 14 games, he posted a batting average of .316/.361/.702 with seven home runs, 11 RBIs and five stolen bases.

Chisholm was replaced in the lineup on Monday by rookie Ben Rice. Rice started at first base in Tuesday's lineup with Oswaldo Cabrera at third. In 40 MLB games, Rice has a batting average of .195/.296/.406 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs. Cabrera has a batting average of .245/.293/.378 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs in 86 games this season.
