Famous geological phenomenon in Utah collapses

A famous geological formation called the Toilet Bowl or Double Arch in southern Utah has collapsed, the National Park Service said, with footage of the aftermath posted on social media.

The famous arch in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area collapsed on Thursday, August 8, and park rangers said they suspect fluctuating water levels and wave erosion in Lake Powell contributed to the collapse.

The structure was formed from 190 million year old Navajo Sandstone from the late Triassic to early Jurassic periods.

Tony Reece posted a video on Sunday showing a view of the site from the water. “The toilet bowl in Lake Powell is no longer there,” he says in the footage. Photo credit: Tony Reece via Storyful
