Yosemite National Park

A 20-year-old man died while hiking in Yosemite National Park last week, officials said.

Matt Mullen, 20, was spending his day off as a camp worker with colleagues at the California national park at the time, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department told PEOPLE in a statement.

“Matt Mullen, an assistant cook in the Camp Mather kitchen, was killed in a tragic accident on Thursday, August 8, while on a day off with coworkers in Yosemite National Park,” a department spokesperson told PEOPLE.

Matt was working for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department for the second summer, but the department stressed that the incident did not occur during work hours or on department property.

Grief counselors are assisting people at the camp affected by Mullen's death, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department spokesman added. They will also provide assistance to his colleagues through the Employee Assistance Program.

According to Camp Mather, the family camp was built in the 1920s near Hetch Hetchy Valley. It is located in close proximity to Yosemite National Park. “Loved by many as a secluded getaway from city life, the camp has been a treasure for generations of San Francisco families,” a description reads.
