I just helped and now I'm accused of stealing a ring

DEAR ABBY: My sister was recently in the hospital. Due to swelling in her hands, her wedding ring had to be removed.

This ring was our late father's wedding ring. I asked her if I should take it home and she nodded. I gave it back to her when she got home.

Now my family is accusing me of theft!

My sister only wears this ring, no others. But my family insists she wore two of our mother's rings. No. Mom was buried with her original wedding band set and her anniversary ring.

I love my family, but right now I'd rather not talk to them for a while. Should I forget the accusations against me or keep my distance for my own benefit?

Dear Defendant: You didn't mention who exactly is accusing you of stealing a ring. Is it your sister? She knows how many rings she was wearing when she came to the hospital and should be able to enlighten those relatives.

If she cannot or will not do so, it may be better for your mental health to avoid your accusers until the matter is resolved.

DEAR ABBY: I am in a relationship with a man named “Gerald” who is an only child and has a difficult relationship with his mother.

We bought his mother's house two years ago because she couldn't afford it. She had separated from her husband, who is not Gerald's father. She originally wanted to stay with us, but instead she got back together with her husband.

The problem is that she has not removed her personal belongings from our house. She is a bit of a hoarder. Our garage is full of her things and every room in our house has her furniture and personal belongings.

I have packed many of them and can no longer bear the fear of the unknown, the waiting, and the wondering when she plans to transport them.

Gerald's strained relationship with his mother doesn't help matters. I got him to text his stepdad and ask when the things would be picked up.

According to Gerald, his mother has control issues and this is all part of her game.
