Man accused of dog death shoots himself while SAPD executes search warrant, police chief says

SAN ANTONIO – A man accused of shooting and killing two dogs in separate incidents over the weekend shot himself as San Antonio police attempted to execute a search warrant on Wednesday, according to Police Chief William McManus.

McManus said officers tracked the 45-year-old man to an apartment complex in the 8500 block of Wakefield, not far from North Star Mall.

SAPD sent investigators to the apartment to execute the warrant and heard a gunshot inside. McManus said the shot likely came from the man himself.

The SWAT team sent a drone into the apartment and found the man with a gunshot wound. McManus initially said the man was dead, but police later said he had a pulse. He is said to be in critical condition.

“I have no idea why he did it,” McManus said.

Owners mourn shot dogs

Two dog owners are mourning after their pets were apparently randomly shot over the weekend.

“It's so hard for me to see her die like that,” said the owner of a 2-year-old husky who was killed. “She was so sweet. She never hurt anyone.”

The husky's owner wished to remain anonymous. She told us that two-year-old Everest was outside a neighbor's house, where she frequently visited to give and receive love.

San Antonio police said the shooting, which occurred around midnight on August 10 in the 1000 block of West Mariposa, was captured by a surveillance camera.

The video showed a dark mid-size SUV driving slowly in front of the house. Two people in the vehicle drove in front of the dog on the sidewalk, shot it and ran away.

A SAPD report said it was believed the shooter was sitting in the right passenger seat while another person was driving the vehicle.

According to the report, the license plate was not visible on the surveillance footage.

According to San Antonio police, another dog was shot just blocks away in the 3200 block of Capitol Avenue on the same night Everest was killed.

“Today you are here and tomorrow you are gone, because I really love my dog and never in a million years would I have thought that I would not have this chance tomorrow,” said the owner of a 4-month-old German Shepherd who wished to remain anonymous

The owner said his puppy Rosie was lying behind the fence in her favorite spot in the yard when a car came down the road and shot at her.
