Byron Buxton lands on the injured list due to hip pain

Byron Buxton will miss at least the next week of play as he has been placed on the 10-day injured list.

The Minnesota Twins made the move Thursday after he reportedly received a cortisone shot for pain in his hip. The outfielder had a rough August. He suffered from back pain that kept him out for three games after he hit the center field wall while catching a ball during an Aug. 4 game against the White Sox.

The hip became a problem when he deflected a throw in Minnesota's game against the Royals on August 12. He left the game early and hasn't played since, although the Twins aren't worried about an extended absence because MRI results were normal.

The move would be retroactive to Aug. 12 or 13, meaning Buxton will miss the entire seven-game road trip that begins Thursday night in Texas and ends next Wednesday in San Diego. He could return from the injured list when the Twins begin a 10-game home stretch beginning Aug. 23 with a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Eddy Julien was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul to take Buxton's place on the roster.

Right-hander Louie Varland was also sent to Triple-A and right-hander Ronny Henriquez was called up to the Twins in Texas.
