LEXINGTON – The Death of a little boy in front of a daycare center in Massachusetts was likely an incident involving an overheated car, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney.

Baby found in car in daycare parking lot

The one-year-old was found unconscious and not breathing in his mother's car on Tuesday evening in a parking lot on Massachusetts Avenue in Lexington. The parking lot is adjacent to a daycare center. The little boy was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The Middlesex District Attorney said the baby did not enter the daycare on Tuesday and may have been in his mother's car for an extended period of time. WBZ-TV contacted the daycare's owner on Wednesday, but she declined to comment.

“It's horrible, you know? None of us can imagine what a family has to go through when they lose a child,” said Lexington Fire Chief Derek Sencabaugh. “The pain that family will probably endure for a lifetime.”

“This will harm the entire community”

The medical examiner will now determine the exact cause of the baby's death. The baby has not yet been identified, but Sencabaugh said the family is from the city.

“It's a close-knit community,” Sencabaugh said. “A lot of people know everyone, so this is going to hurt the community as a whole. This is going to bring a lot of pain.”

The incident remains under investigation by the Middlesex District Attorney, the Massachusetts State Police and the Lexington Police Department.
