Canales frustrated by Terrace Marshall's 'stupid football decision' that sparked controversy

There were a few scuffles during today's joint practice between the Carolina Panthers and the New York Jets, but the first confrontation between Terrace Marshall Jr. and DJ Reed developed into the biggest scuffle of the day.

Bryce Young threw a perfect fade ball to Marshall in the back corner of the end zone and despite being held and obstructed, Marshall held on and grabbed it. After getting up, Marshall threw the ball in Reed's direction, who didn't mind the gesture and began chasing it. Panthers center Austin Corbett saw Reed's eyes light up from a mile away and immediately ran to protect his teammate and prevent a major fight. Reed then backed up, grabbed the football, chased Marshall and did his best Paul Skenes impersonation by throwing the ball as hard as he could in Marshall's direction from close range.

Marshall acknowledged that throwing the ball in Reed's direction was a poor decision, explaining that it was not something he would have done in a game that would result in a loss for his team. Head coach Dave Canales expressed his frustration with the play in his post-practice press conference.

“That's stupid football. We can't tolerate that. Guys fighting. We want to celebrate with each other. We want to make plays and not give the opponent anything. That's exactly the kind of thing I accused them of, especially before this practice. He was excited. He made a great play against a really good player. Let's leave it at that. A great football play. How about we celebrate that? He and I talked about it out there and we've put it behind us. But those are the (learning) moments. It's too tough. Football is too tough and the gaps are so tight in this league. You can't afford to give the opponent anything. Not the ball, not a penalty.”
