Traitors now teach patriotism: DKS

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday said: “Traitors who side with the British during the freedom struggle” are now teaching patriotism to others. In his speech at the KPCC office in the city, he emphasized the role of congress in the Fight for freedomand said it should be passed on to the new generation.
“About 650,000 Congressmen sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle. We are proud that our Congress party fought for independence… Now we have to protect the country from wolves in sheep's clothing,” he said.
He criticised the BJP-led government at the Centre for privatising public institutions built and developed by the Congress government. Shivakumar pointed out that politicians like Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who wrote a letter to the British to “suppress the Quit India movement”, are now followed by people who question the Congress' contributions to the country.
“It is because of our collective reluctance that the false claim is being spread that leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Sardar Patel did not fight for independence,” he said.
He also highlighted the significant role of Karnataka in the freedom struggle. “Karnataka was the first state to ignite the fire of revolution against the British. The Amara Sulya Movement in 1837 was the first freedom struggle in the country. Issuru village in Shikaripura taluk of Shivamogga district was the first to declare independence. The Salt Satyagraha in Ankola in Uttara Kannada district in 1930 was led by Congress leader Hanumantha Rao. Karnataka and Kannadigas made tremendous contributions to the freedom struggle,” he said.
Shivakumar also mentioned the government's plans to organise programmes in Belagavi to mark the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's inauguration as Congress president. “Freedom is not a commodity that can be bought. It is the breath of life. Mahatma Gandhi said freedom is priceless. Nehru said if the heart is filled with envy or hatred, there can be no freedom,” he said.
Shivakumar also praised Prime Minister Siddaramaiah's message that true freedom can be achieved only when all sections of society are free from hunger, poverty, darkness and unemployment. He highlighted the five guarantee schemes that have “brought social justice to all sections of society” and “attracted the attention of many states and countries around the world”.
