Three-year-old in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in Newark, police say

NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) – According to police, a child is in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in Newark.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said police were called to a residence on Wainwright Street near Bragaw Avenue at 5:47 p.m. where a shooting had occurred.

When officers arrived, they found a three-year-old boy who had been shot and two other children who were unharmed.

The child was taken to the university hospital and is in critical condition.

A firearm was seized at the crime scene.

According to police, the shooting was apparently accidental and self-inflicted.

The incident remains under investigation.
