Santa Barbara jury finds Cora Vides guilty of attempted murder in 2017; trial moves to insanity defense

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A Santa Barbara jury found Cora Vides guilty of attempted murder on Monday, and on Thursday the case entered a new phase that will consider whether she is not guilty by reason of insanity.

On Monday, August 12, Vides was found guilty of attempted murder under the crime PC 664/187(a) and the jury also found the following special charges to be true:

  • PC 664(a) – The crime was intentional and deliberate
  • PC 12022.7(a) – The defendant inflicted grievous bodily harm on the defendant himself
  • PC 12022(b)(1) – The defendant personally used a deadly weapon

On February 14, 2017, Vides was arrested for the attempted murder of a fellow student at Laguna Blanca School at her family's home in the Mesa neighborhood of Santa Barbara. Her bail was initially set at $1 million.

The criminal trial now moves to the insanity phase, where her plea of ​​not guilty by reason of insanity will be considered under Penal Code 1026/1027 of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office.

According to the Santa Barbara District Attorney's Office, the prosecution team expects the insanity phase to be completed early next week.
