25-year-old arrested after shooting in Danville on Thursday

DANVILLE, Virginia. – We're told Danville police have made an arrest following a shooting Thursday.

Marvin Saunders Jr., 25, was charged with:

  • Attempted malicious bodily harm

  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a crime

  • Firing a firearm in a public place

  • reckless handling of a firearm

  • Waving a firearm around

We're told Saunders fired one shot at a 39-year-old man he was having an altercation with in the 200 block of North Main Street. No one was injured in the incident. One vehicle was struck.

Saunders and the 39-year-old knew each other; the crime was not a coincidence. The police were called to the scene shortly after 5:15 p.m. and learned that Saunders had fled.

According to authorities, two officers in separate police vehicles were on North Main Street and spotted Saunders in the southbound lane driving a white Dodge pickup truck.

During the pursuit, an officer was involved in a traffic accident at the intersection of West Thomas Street and North Main Street. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle involved were taken from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was uninjured and the accident is under investigation.

As 10 News learned, a traffic stop was conducted on the shooting suspect's vehicle shortly after the traffic accident. Saunders was arrested during the stop and a weapon was confiscated.

Saunders is being held without bail in the Danville Jail and the shooting remains under investigation.
