Second person arrested and charged with murder in Carrboro in May

CARRBORO, NC (WTVD) – Carrboro police have arrested a second person in connection with a murder that occurred in May.

According to Carrboro police, the shooting occurred on May 29 at the Estes Park Apartments at 306 Estes Drive Ext. When officers arrived, they found Juan Maldonado Espinoza, 41, of Carrboro dead at the scene.

Police said Dolores De Jesus Benavides Zelaya, 30, of Burlington was arrested in July and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy and attempted kidnapping.

A second suspect, 28-year-old Karla Maria Machuca of Burlington, was arrested and charged in June with first-degree murder, conspiracy and attempted kidnapping.

Authorities said both Benavides Zelaya and Machuca were arrested in Los Angeles and will now be extradited to North Carolina to face charges.
