Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy condemns his player Albert Huggins after he allegedly hit a Rams intern

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said the recent incident involving Cowboys defensive tackle Albert Huggins was unacceptable.

During a practice on Wednesday, Huggins collided with a Los Angeles Rams intern, knocking the smaller employee to the ground.

McCarthy spoke about the incident on Thursday.

“His behavior is obviously unacceptable,” McCarthy said, via ESPN's Todd Archer. “It's something that's been addressed. He apologized, and I'm pleased with his apology. I was obviously on the offensive side of the field when it happened.”

McCarthy added that after the first hit, he consulted with Rams coaches Sean McVay and Mike Zimmer about the next steps.

“I had a chance to talk to Mike Zimmer and Sean McVay. When it happened, we held him out of practice,” McCarthy said. “Honestly, when I saw the video a few hours after practice, I called Sean again. His response was, 'You would have been proud of how your coaches reacted.' I just want to make sure that behavior is unacceptable. Emotional discipline in that moment. That's not what we're about, and he clearly understands that.”

Coaches prevented the incident from escalating. There were some loud exchanges on the field between the Rams and Cowboys players and coaches, but practice continued as normal afterward.

An equipment intern reportedly stepped in at one game to cover for a quarterback during a drill in the pocket. The hit occurred on a play in which Huggins ran over Rams guard Grant Miller. As he entered the backfield, Huggins stopped the play, walked toward the intern and shoved him to the ground.

Huggins, 27, is 6'3″, 290 pounds and has yet to record a sack in his career. He signed with the Cowboys on Aug. 6 after a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. He previously played for the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots and the Cowboys' arch-rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, where he began his career after going undrafted out of Clemson in 2019.

The Rams had just won a 13-12 warm-up win against the Cowboys on Sunday.

The two teams will not face each other in the regular season this year, but both teams could be contenders for a playoff spot and a possible postseason matchup.
