Madisonville woman leaves prison to become teacher

MADISONVILLE, Texas (KBTX) – Thursday marked a new beginning for about 2,400 CISD students in Madisonville and Latunja Jones.

After a 32-year career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, she is finally realizing her dream of becoming a teacher.

“I want to plant everything that I know wasn't good so they can be our good citizens and go out into the world and be successful,” Jones said.

Jones teaches third grade at Madisonville Intermediate, but began her career as a substitute teacher in 2019. Soon after, she became the school's librarian.

“I was able to learn more about school life, education and books,” Jones said. “Reading is such an important part of life. The library is also where you meet your babies.”

The teacher earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Phoenix in July and is now looking forward to building relationships with students in her own classroom.

“This job requires you to love these babies, and I love it,” Jones said. “I love what I do. I love these babies.”

Jones said she knows she has what it takes to be a great teacher and is looking forward to the coming year.

“What sets me apart is just who I am,” Jones said. “I'm a people person. I love people and even on my bad days, you wouldn't know it because I'm always one of those people… Good morning, good morning, and I think we set the tone for the day.”

KBTX also spoke with teachers from the high school, junior high school and elementary school at Madisonville CISD. Those interviews can be found below:
