Duval County judge hears case as former Rep. Brown and state Rep. Nixon face off in battle over 'Quick Picks' voter guides

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – A Duval County judge is scheduled to hear the case between former Congresswoman Corrine Brown and state Rep. Angie Nixon on Friday morning.

Brown announced at a press conference on Monday that she had filed for a temporary restraining order against Nixon, who was accused of distributing fraudulent “quick pick” voter guides in Duval County.

The lawsuit calls for an immediate end to the distribution of fake voting manuals.

Brown said she spent years vetting candidates and then putting those she thought were the best fit on her “quick pick” list. This time, Brown claims, Rep. Nixon falsified Brown's list to indicate Brown's support.

Nixon said neither she nor her campaign team authorized the “fraudulent” Quick Pick guide.

“The fraudulent voter guides mislead voters by attributing Brown's support to candidates the congresswoman never supported. In some cases, the fake voter guides even claim that Brown supported the candidate she actually opposes,” a Brown spokesperson said in a press release.

The injunction suit against Nixon and Step To Success LLC includes three counts of violations of Florida state law: making false or malicious statements, campaigning with false information, and misrepresenting the identity or source of a political advertisement.

“Our democratic process is fundamentally based on truth in advertising,” Brown said. “You can't say I support Angie Nixon when I actually support Brenda A. Priestly Jackson as our next state representative. That's not just wrong, it's illegal – and Angie Nixon knows it. I condemn her dirty political tricks and will make Angie Nixon stop them to the fullest extent of the law.”

Nixon told News4JAX that her campaign had nothing to do with the fake guide.

“I'm so disappointed. This is just so embarrassing. Every two years rumors come up about me and what I did and what I didn't do. This is just very unfortunate. The fact is that my campaign team did not authorize the distribution of illegal quick picks or whatever,” Nixon said. “I don't have time for that. This is very unfortunate and AG also said there were some fake quick picks last year. For me to be the one being targeted is just ridiculous.”

Nixon pointed his finger at one of the women at the press conference, candidate and House Representative Kimberly Daniels.

“I mean, I beat Kim Daniels four years ago,” Nixon said. “I guarantee that had something to do with it.”

Brown said it is currently a civil lawsuit, but if fake Quick Picks continue to be distributed, she will push for a criminal investigation.
