Supreme Court denies provisional release of man accused of murdering police officer in Rutland

MONTPELIER, Vermont (WCAX) – The Vermont Supreme Court orders the man accused of causing a car crash that killed a Rutland police officer to remain behind bars until his trial.

According to police, Tate Rheaume fled from police officers in July 2023, crossed the center line and collided head-on with Officer Jessica Ebbighausen's patrol car, killing her. He is awaiting trial for aggravated murder, which carries a life sentence.

Rhéaume appealed to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, arguing that he should be released on bail. His lawyer told the judges that Rhéaume had no previous convictions and had complied with the conditions of his release.

The court confirmed the lower court's findings on Wednesday and stated: “The proposed release conditions did not sufficiently reduce the risk of him fleeing and the danger he posed to the public.”

A trial date has yet to be announced.
