Cook County deputy arrested after drug-laced papers found at home: Sheriff's Office

A Cook County corrections officer was arrested and arraigned Friday morning after she was allegedly found in possession of dozens of sheets of paper soaked with illegal drugs.

Shadonna Jones, 54, of Lynwood, is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to resell, a Class 3 felony, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Her arrest followed a search warrant executed at her home on July 25.

During the search, officers found an envelope containing 48 sheets of paper that were stained and “had a grainy texture,” according to the sheriff's office.

They also found a letter addressed to Jones that appeared to have been written by an inmate at the Cook County Jail.

The inmate said he sold the newspaper for $10,000 per page and Jones would receive $2,500 for each package of newspapers she could bring into the jail, the sheriff's office said.

When questioned by investigators, Jones said she received the papers from an inmate's family member and was paid $1,000 for them.

She claimed the papers were for someone else in prison. Investigators found that Jones denied she would serve the papers.

The suspected drug-soaked paper found in Jones' garage was sent to the Illinois State Police for examination.

According to the sheriff's office, lab results received Wednesday confirmed the presence of MDMB-BUTINACA, a synthetic cannabinoid.

Jones was hired as a Cook County Sheriff's Deputy in June 2019 and has been injured in the line of duty since July 15. Her injury occurred when she attempted to intervene in a fight between two inmates at the jail.

A separate internal investigation is ongoing and could lead to her termination.

She is expected in court on September 19 at 9:30 a.m.
