Children of celebrities who are estranged from famous parents

In 2002, Voight publicly acknowledged his estrangement from Jolie in an interview with Access Hollywood. He mentioned that Jolie had “unspecified” mental health issues and pleaded with her fans and advisers to make sure she got help.

He claimed he was “heartbroken… because I have tried to reach out to my daughter and help her and have not been able to, and I am sorry. While I have not gone public and addressed the serious mental health issues that she has spoken so openly about with the press over the years, I have tried in every way I can behind the scenes.”

At the time, he said he had not yet met his grandson Maddox, whom Jolie and her ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton had recently adopted. “This is the biggest pain,” he said. “I would love to help with the baby.”

Voight then criticized Jolie and Thornton's marriage, stating, “I never felt like they were going to make it because they both have serious issues and they've both been very public about it, so I never really had hope.”

Jolie admitted in interviews that she had mental health problems, but did not say that these were the reason for the argument with her father. Nor did she confirm that Voight helped her.
