Man arrested after chase in Henry County

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A man was arrested following a chase on Friday, August 16 and faces several charges.

The Henry County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a white Chrysler 300 on Summit Road.

During the traffic stop, the man refused to stop, which, according to officers, led to a chase at over 160 km/h.

Shortly thereafter, the man lost control of his vehicle on Carver Road and struck a railing and a concrete pillar, causing the vehicle to end up in a ditch, officials said.

According to officers, the man refused to comply with the order to exit the vehicle and attempted to drive away.

According to officials, the Henry County Police and Drug Dog Unit arrived on scene and assisted in the arrest of the man.

Officers said several items were seized, including an undisclosed amount of cocaine, marijuana, cash and a cell phone. All items were related to the distribution of narcotics, officers said.

According to officials, all suspected narcotics are sent to the Virginia Department of Forensic Science for analysis.

The suspect, Derrick Mananda Hairston, 47, of Ridgeway, was charged with

  • Aggravated possession of Schedule I or II drugs with intent to resell (2nd offense)
  • Driving under the influence of drugs
  • obstruction
  • Crime of evading prosecution
  • Driving too close

He is being held without bail at the Henry County Adult Detention Center.
