49ers have to do without starter Aaron Banks due to injury

Another San Francisco 49ers player has been hit by injury misfortune.

This time it's left guard Aaron Banks. On Friday, Kyle Shanahan announced that Banks suffered a broken finger and will need surgery, so his status for Week 1 against the New York Jets is uncertain.

“He broke his little finger and had surgery this morning. We hope he'll be back to full health in the first week,” Shanahan said.

The 49ers' offensive line has been a game of musical chairs since the start of training camp. With Trent Williams out and several players injured, the group has been constantly reshuffled. Jon Feliciano is out from week to week with a knee injury, Spencer Burford is recovering from a broken arm, and now Banks is injured.

That's a total of four players missing from the offensive line that started last year. It's starting to become a concern as to what the group will look like when it plays against the Jets. The cohesion of the offensive line is crucial. Yes, these players are not strangers to each other and it probably won't take that long for them to get along well.

But it's still something to keep an eye on and wonder if they'll be OK. At this point, the 49ers need to be wrapping everyone in bubble wrap. The frequency of injuries to their players is unreal. The bright side of that is that Banks won't be out for such a long time that he puts more than Week 1 in jeopardy.

If he can't play against the Jets, the 49ers could consider Feliciano as a replacement.
