Newlyweds and mother of the bride died in accident on way to honeymoon, police said

(Gray News) – A newlywed couple's love story ended when the couple was killed in a car accident on their way to their honeymoon, authorities said.

The accident occurred around 8:21 a.m. on I-70 in Colorado, KMGH reported.

According to police, 33-year-old Ruben Rodriguez and 37-year-old Juliana Rodriguez-Plata were on their way to their honeymoon in the mountains with their 1-year-old son and Juliana's parents when an eastbound truck overturned, sending pipes spilling across the highway.

When the truck hit the roadway, the pipes broke loose from the truck and spilled into the eastbound and westbound lanes, causing a crash involving at least three other vehicles.

According to official reports, Ruben and Juliana as well as Juliana's mother were killed.

Juliana's father, Carlos Joaquin Plata, and the couple's one-year-old son, Daniel “Danny,” were also injured in the accident.

Her family told KMGH that the couple got married last Saturday.

“We were just happy. We were just having fun. And then we got the news that they were gone,” said Janell Rodriguez, Ruben's sister-in-law.

The family is trying to understand why a young couple's life was taken so early.

“And then the baby without both parents, you know? It's hard. It's hard for the family. That's why we're here together now and trying to be strong together,” Janell said.

The family has a GoFundMe page to help pay the costs.

According to the police, the investigation into the accident is still at an early stage.
