Details emerge about Los Angeles doctor linked to Matthew Perry's death – NBC Los Angeles

A licensed physician who is among five people charged in connection with the accidental ketamine overdose death of “Friends” star Matthew Perry was released from jail Friday after posting bail.

Dr. Salvador Plasencia, known as Dr. P to his patients, including the late actor, runs Malibu Canyon Urgent Care, which was closed Friday.

“I've worked with him for years. He's a good doctor,” said a woman who works with Plasencia. “I don't know the whole story. I'm not involved in it, but I know him as a person. And I know he's a really good person.”

Plasencia's lawyer also believes he can challenge the charges against Plasencia in court.

“He is confident that he will prevail when the evidence comes to light,” said Stefan Sacks, Plasencia's lawyer.

But recently unsealed court documents say Plasencia showed Perry's assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, how to inject the drug after supplying him with numerous vials of ketamine in exchange for cash.

Federal prosecutors claimed the ketamine that killed Perry was supplied by another supplier, but the DEA said sales to doctors fueled the actor's addiction.

“Matthew Perry's journey began with unscrupulous doctors who abused their positions of trust because they only made money from him,” said Anne Milgram of the DEA.

Neighbors of Plasencia in Agoura Hills said the doctor and his family mostly kept to themselves in the neighborhood.

Plasencia faces several charges that could result in a sentence of up to 120 years in a federal prison.
