Free summer events cut entertainment costs while families elsewhere struggle with inflation

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Your last trip to the grocery store, gas up your car or dinner out might remind you of skyrocketing costs in a time known as the Inflation Era.

There are no quick answers, but many people have discovered free summer activities as a way to enjoy music, movies and time together without a high cost.

These events include the UC Santa Barbara Arts & Lectures Series Summer Films on the theme Sun, surfing and cinema takes place at the Sunken Gardens Courthouse.

Tonight is week six with the free film “Mama Mia” on the big screen, in front of which normally around 1500 people sit.

Other events include the six-week “Concerts in the Park” concert series at Chase Palm Park, which ended on Thursday evening.

Goleta also offers weekly shows on the lawns of Rancho La Patera and Stow House with live music and dancing. They take place on Tuesdays and there are two other shows on the schedule.

Carpinteria just finished its four-week film series on the lawn of Linden Field next to the state park campground.

Some events have food trucks, but many people pack an inexpensive picnic to accompany the free show.

Some people enjoy sitting together with friends at a potluck party, eating, chatting, and sometimes even getting up and dancing if there is a musical show.

Organizers ask visitors sitting near others to be respectful and to arrange low-backed chairs to ensure good visibility.

If you attend all of these free shows, you can save hundreds of dollars on entertainment costs, especially if you have children.

It is especially important to balance other rising costs in your budget.
