Emmonak man charged after ATV incident

Jonathan Stewart Andrews, 30, of Emmonak, was charged with multiple misdemeanors following a serious off-road vehicle accident on August 14, 2024. Andrews' brother, Archie Andrews, was seriously injured in the incident.

According to court documents, Alaska State Troopers were called to the scene of the accident at around 11:29 p.m. after receiving a report from another brother, Rick Andrews.

Rick stated that Jonathan had “side-swiped” Archie with an ATV earlier that evening, causing Archie to fall and lose a shoe. Rick said he decided to separate his two brothers by driving Archie back home. Then, as they were going about 25 miles per hour, Rick said, Jonathan rear-ended their ATV.

The impact reportedly caused Archie to be thrown from the vehicle, unresponsive and lying in a pool of blood.

Archie was later taken to Emmonak Hospital, where medical staff suspected he had suffered a skull fracture. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was then flown by helicopter to a higher level of care facility.

The report indicated that Jonathan Andrews was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident. Upon arriving at the scene, Alaska State Trooper Medina noticed his bloodshot eyes, strong odor of alcohol, and unsteady demeanor. Jonathan refused to make any statements to authorities or to submit to a preliminary breath test.

Jonathan Andrews faces several charges, including first-degree assault, a Class A felony, for negligently causing great bodily injury to his brother Archie. He is also charged with third-degree assault, a Class C felony, and driving under the influence, a Class A misdemeanor.

Jonathan Andrews has a history of similar crimes and has been convicted of fourth-degree assault twice in the past decade.

Jonathan was arrested and is being held at the Emmonak Prison. The case is being prosecuted by the Alaska State Attorney General's Office.
