They will have freedom to work – Mahama promises journalists | General News

Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised to ensure freedom of journalists in the performance of their duties if he becomes the next president.

Mr Mahama criticised the current government for constantly harassing journalists in the performance of their duties and stressed the crucial role of journalists in the country.

Mr Mahama then promised: “We will work to ensure that the dangers you face are minimised.”

Mr Mahama was speaking to journalists at a media encounter as he concluded his four-day election campaign in the Volta Region.

“The best thing you can give the media is to give them freedom to do their job. Unfortunately, that has not happened under this government. Media people have been hunted, some have fled into exile, some have been threatened, their lives have been threatened and some have actually paid the ultimate price, like Ahmed Suale.” recalled the former president.

“You can trust that as a member of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), I am not the kind of person who would harass the media. One gift I can give you is the freedom to do your job without anyone intimidating and bullying you.” Mahama promised it.
