Man accused in fatal Broward crash violates pretrial release again

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida. – Isaiah LaFleur was 18 years old when he crashed a red Chevrolet Camaro. Detectives said the student collided with a black 2013 Yamaha scooter and the force of the impact threw and killed a man on Stirling Road in Hollywood.

The accident occurred in Hollywood on December 19, 2021. According to Hollywood Detective Alejandro Falcon's report, investigators were able to estimate from surveillance video that the scooter was traveling within the 30 mph speed limit while LeFleur was traveling over 70 mph.

A witness told police that LaFleur stopped after the accident and quickly approached the victim. Falcon wrote him three tickets.

“This accident would not have occurred if LaFleur had operated his vehicle at or near the speed limit and exercised due caution when passing another vehicle,” Falcon wrote.

LaFleur, now 20, is a father. Correctional officers with the Broward Sheriff's Office have been holding him without bail at the main jail since Friday. He has been in and out of jail in both Miami-Dade and Broward over the past few years while awaiting trial for the fatal crash.

LaFleur was able to graduate from high school months after the accident. Records show that Broward Sheriff's Office pretrial release specialists reported that he had difficulty complying with house arrest restrictions and that violations had occurred in 2022, 2023 and most recently in July.

After Hollywood detectives investigated the fatal accident, police officers arrested LaFleur on May 11, 2022. The Broward District Attorney's Office filed charges against him on May 31, 2022. He was charged with three counts: one count of negligent homicide and two counts of reckless driving.

Meanwhile, in Miami-Dade, a felony charge was pending against LaFleur on March 17, 2022, which prosecutors dismissed on April 26, 2022. Broward County District Judge N. Hunter Davis issued an arrest warrant for LaFleur on June 1, 2022.

LaFleur turned himself in to the BSO at the Fort Lauderdale Main Jail on September 12, 2022. He appeared before Broward County District Judge Phoebee Francois on September 13, 2022.

A prosecutor said he still has pending charges in Miami-Dade for allegedly beating his sister and a police chase in 2021. His defense said he wanted to get a job so he could save money for college. Francois set his bail at $47,000 and released him before trial.

LaFleur's arraignment for the Broward crash was held on September 21, 2022. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. LaFleur posted $1,000 bail on October 11, 2022 and entered into a house arrest agreement with BSO on October 19, 2022.

La Fleur has also had further legal troubles in Miami-Dade County. Records show that Miami-Dade police officers arrested him on November 3, 2022, for attempted assault. A bail hearing was held in Broward County on November 4, 2022.

Miami-Dade prosecutors dropped the attempted assault charge on December 6, 2022. Broward County court records show Hunter has given him the opportunity to continue his pre-trial release program.

The first violation reported by a BSO specialist occurred on December 22, 2022. The specialist accused him of an unauthorized trip with his GPS monitor to Wilton Manors and Pompano Beach. A day later, Hunter issued an arrest warrant.

LaFleur was arrested on probation on January 5, 2023, and after his defense requested his release, Hunter granted it on January 6, 2023. LaFleur entered into his second BSO pre-trial release agreement a few days later.

On June 22, 2023, LaFleur's defense asked Hunter to allow him to work so he could help his mother with living expenses. A few days later, Hunter agreed to change the conditions as long as he wore a GPS monitor.

On March 15, Hunter granted LaFleur's request to visit his son in Wilton Manors, which was approved by a release officer. Miami-Dade police arrested him on May 16 for assault. He was released on $1,000 bail on May 23 before being arrested again in Broward.

Miami-Dade prosecutors dropped the assault charge on July 9. After the defense filed a motion to reinstate Hunter's pretrial release, LaFleur signed his third house arrest agreement with BSO on July 18.

A specialist from the BSO pre-trial service reported on August 2 that he had again violated this during unauthorized trips on July 30 and 31.

Hunter issued an arrest warrant on Aug. 9. Records show LaFleur was arrested and taken to jail on Friday. BSO officers transported him to the main jail, where he remained without bail Saturday afternoon.
