Kolkata murder case: CBI conducts psychoanalysis of accused | 10 points | Latest news from India

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday sent a team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi to conduct psychoanalysis on Sanjay Roy, the main accused in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Roy, a volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on Saturday, a day after the doctor's body was found between 3 and 5 a.m. in the seminar hall of the government hospital's pulmonary department.

The accused, a trained boxer, became close to some senior police officials over the years, following which he was transferred to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and posted at the police outpost of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, PTI reported.

Here are the most important news related to the gruesome murder that has sparked widespread outrage across the country.

1. The CBI questioned Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College Hospital, for the second consecutive day. He was also questioned on Friday from 9.30 pm to 1.40 am. According to a PTI report, Ghosh was asked by the CBI about his first reaction to the news of the doctor's death, who he had instructed to inform her family and how and who contacted the police.

2. Separate teams of the CBI also reached the crime scene at RG Kar Hospital and the barracks of the fourth battalion of the Kolkata Police Force in Salt Lake, where the arrested main accused, volunteer Sanjay Roy, was staying, PTI reported.

3. At RG Kar Hospital, CBI investigators collected samples and sent them to the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory for examination, an official said. “At the KP barrack, the team spoke to the policemen posted there and enquired about the movements of the accused on Friday morning. They recorded the details of when Roy returned to the barrack and what he was doing there,” the official told PTI.

4. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has put forward a series of demands to Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the doctor's murder in Kolkata. The top medical body has demanded a central bill incorporating the amendments to the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, 2020 in the draft 'The Healthcare Services Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property Bill 2019'.

5. The opposition CPI(M) in Bengal claimed that the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was an attempt to “cover up the truth”. In a post on X, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “This vandalism of doctors protesting against the gruesome rape and murder of a colleague at RG Kar Medical College is a shameful attempt to silence the judiciary and cover up the truth.”

6. Protests by medical professionals against the brutal rapes and murders in Kolkata continue across the country. Major private hospitals in Delhi joined the protests on Saturday and closed their operating theatre departments, elective surgeries and IPD services.

7. The Mamata Banerjee government has introduced a new safety programme for women working at night in the state. It includes separate toilets for women at the workplace, female volunteers called 'Rattirer Shaathi' and safety zones marked by CCTV.

8. Earlier, the Ministry of Health had called on the protesting doctors to resume their work and assured that a committee would be set up to recommend measures to ensure the safety of medical personnel.

9. Asha Devi, mother of Nirbhaya, who was accused of gang rape in Delhi in 2012, demanded Mamata Banerjee's resignation over the incident. “Mamata Banerjee is protesting to divert people's attention from this issue. She is a woman herself. She should have taken strict action against the perpetrators while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign for failing to handle the situation,” Asha Devi told PTI.

10. Kolkata Police, investigating the large-scale vandalism at RG Kar Hospital in the early hours of August 15, said the number of arrests in connection with the violence currently stands at 30.
