Angel Gomes: Former Manchester United midfielder in hospital after head injury

Lille midfielder Angel Gomes is in hospital after suffering a serious head injury in his team's Ligue 1 match against Reims.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury in a headbutt with Amadou Kone, who immediately received a red card for the incident.

The game was stopped for a long time because Gomes had to receive medical treatment on the field. Both groups of players formed a circle around the midfielder and fans from both teams chanted his name.

After a delay of over 20 minutes, Gomes was strapped onto a stretcher and carried off the pitch by medical staff. Lille later confirmed that the player had regained consciousness and was in hospital.

The delay in play due to Gomes' treatment resulted in 34 minutes of added time in the first half. Lille secured a two-goal victory thanks to goals from Bafode Diakite and Jonathan David.

Gomes spent 14 years at Manchester United, making ten appearances for the club's first team before joining Lille in 2020. He spent the 2020–21 season on loan at Portuguese club Boavista.

Gomes played for the England U21 national team and made 116 appearances for Lille.

United sent a supportive message to their academy graduate, writing on social media: “Sending love and strength to Andre Gomes who has been hospitalised following a collision while playing for Lille. We are thinking of you, Angel.”
