20 kidnap victims regain their freedom in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has announced the rescue of 20 persons abducted along Osi/Obbo-Aiyegunle road in Ekiti Local Government Area on Friday, August 16.

In a statement on Saturday, August 17, Police Spokesperson Toun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed that the rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with local vigilante groups.

She reported that all victims were recovered alive and three of them were taken to hospital for treatment with injuries.

The abducted persons were travelling in three different vehicles from Kwara to Kogi State when they were abducted by armed men and taken into the bush.

However, the spokesman pointed out that none of the suspects had been arrested.

The statement said: “The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public about a kidnapping incident and successful rescue operation on August 16, 2024.

“On the said day, at about 3:00 p.m., the command received information that about ten armed men had ambushed three vehicles along the Osi/Obbo-Aiyegunle road. The armed men abducted the twenty passengers from three commercial vehicles and forcibly led them into the surrounding bush.

“Upon receiving this distress call, the Kwara State Police Command in collaboration with local vigilantism groups quickly mobilised the Divisional Patrol Team and other tactical teams which launched a thorough search operation. The operation took place in the dense forest area between Obbo-Aiyegunle and Obbo-Ile.

“Through the combined efforts of our police officers, vigilante groups and community members, the team was able to rescue 20 victims. It is with great relief that we announce the safe return of these individuals.”

The statement added that three of the victims suffered gunshot wounds to their legs during the kidnapping and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

“Three of the victims, who sustained gunshot wounds to their legs during the ordeal, were immediately taken to hospital for urgent medical attention. We wish them a speedy recovery.”

“The Kwara Police Commissioner, Victor Olaiya, wishes to assure the public that the search for the perpetrators is still ongoing. Our men are carefully combing the area and are determined to bring the criminals to justice. We are committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and travellers in Kwara State.

“We commend the courage and quick response of our officers, as well as the cooperation of the local vigilante group, which led to a successful rescue with no casualties among the victims. Further information on this case will be shared with the public as the investigation progresses.

“We urge the public to remain calm and alert and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or via our emergency numbers,” it added.
