An inmate at the Hubbard County Jail is facing additional charges after he stabbed a correctional officer multiple times in the head and face, authorities said.

What we know

According to the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, on August 7 at approximately 5:30 p.m., a correctional officer was monitoring inmates at a desk in the Hubbard County Jail. Then the 23-year-old inmate left his cell and reportedly attacked the officer.

According to authorities, the inmate stabbed the officer several times with a sharp metal object called a “shank,” causing multiple cuts to his head and face.

The officer detained the inmate until another correctional officer could come to his aid, the sheriff's office said. The injured officer was taken to the hospital and treated.

According to police, the inmate made the weapon from a holder that he had removed from a table in the common room.

The sheriff's office said the inmate made a statement saying he “had chased the officer before stabbing him and that he would stab more officers at every opportunity” and that “the officers were committed to doing so.”

What fees apply?

The inmate was initially imprisoned on charges of criminal damage and assault on a peace officer.

According to the sheriff's office, he is now charged with first, second, third and fourth degree assault.
