Community concerned after murder suspect was able to leave prison due to error in court system

A man is back in custody weeks after a fatal shooting at an uptown Charlotte nightclub.

Despite serious charges being brought against 31-year-old Laquan Hoe, he was initially able to post bail and leave prison.

Channel 9's Glenn Counts investigated how the suspect was able to escape so quickly.

On June 8, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a shooting at the A1 Lounge on North Tryon Street.

At the scene, police found four people with gunshot wounds. Each victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where one of them, Aundrey Brown Jr., died.

Police said Hoe was arrested in connection with the case shortly after the shooting, but because several people were in possession of the weapon used in the shooting, it took some time before he was charged with murder.

According to court officials, Hoe was originally held in jail without bail, but an error resulted in him being granted a $10,000 bond.

“The clerk of court erroneously entered the $10,000 secured bond for the prior assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. The $10,000 secured bond should have been entered for the probation violation only,” the court administrator's office said.

Hoe posted bail and was at large for weeks before police could formally charge him with murder.

Marcus Philemon, founder of Court Watch, told Channel 9 he understood the police's frustration.

“There should be more checks and balances when you consider the criminal history of the individual. I think there should have been more checks and balances. Someone should have said, 'Hey, these are pretty serious charges that require $10,000 bail and this person can pay $1,000 bail,'” Philemon explained. “I think they have every right to be frustrated. They wasted time, resources and taxpayer money that didn't need to be spent because the person was already where they needed to be.”

According to police, Hoe was re-arrested and charged with murder. He is currently in jail without bail.
