Injury summary: Several Steelers injured in loss to Bills

The Pittsburgh Steelers finished Saturday night with as many injuries as points after an ugly 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Acrisure Stadium. Mike Tomlin summarized the team's injuries after the game and listed several names that had to leave the game early.

RB Jaylen Warren (hamstring), LB Payton Wilson (concussion) and CB Anthony Averett (hamstring) left the field and did not return. Tomlin said Wilson was “being treated for a concussion” after a collision midway through the game.

“Jaylen Warren suffered a hamstring injury in the game,” Tomlin said on the team's YouTube channel. “I don't know the extent of it. He's being evaluated. Payton Wilson is being treated for a concussion. Anthony Averett also suffered a hamstring injury.”

Warren will hopefully return before the Steelers' Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons and play half of their backfield. Wilson had plenty of playing time before getting injured and was expected to rotate with LB Elandon Roberts. Averett is a backup corner battling for a practice squad spot. This injury won't help him with that.

“I’ll give you more details the next time we meet,” Tomlin said.

Although Tomlin claimed all healthy players would compete, he held back veteran DL Cam Heyward and OLB TJ Watt. Watt told Missi Matthews of Steelers.com that he hopes to play in the final preseason game next week. Injured players who were unable to play include OLB Alex Highsmith (groin), RB Jonathan Ward (hamstring), CB Beanie Bishop (unknown) and C Nate Herbig (left shoulder).

Tomlin said Bishop was limited in Thursday's joint practice against Buffalo and the team acted “prudently” in not using him. Tomlin indicated Bishop will be available for next week's game. Tomlin also indicated the team will “continue” using Highsmith throughout the week.

Others like CB Donte Jackson and DL DeMarvin Leal returned to play after missing the end of training camp with minor injuries.

According to Gerry Dulac of PPG, Herbig suffered a serious injury that will keep him out of action for an extended period of time. That leaves rookie Zach Frazier in line to start at center. Tomlin said Herbig is getting a second opinion on his injury.

Pittsburgh travels to Detroit next Saturday night for its only away game of the preseason against the Lions.
